Don't fall for the gimmicks

February 06, 2025

Ever heard of “Spaving”?  Basically it’s a way for retailers to sucker you in to spending more money by offering you some type of savings.  This tactic is running rampant now in digital retail through social media groups, text notifications and emails.  For example, “spend more, save more” gimmicks with 50% off purchases of $150 or more.  Or how about  “Spend $75 to qualify for free shipping”.  While this may seem like a good deal, spending “just a little more” repeatedly through the course of the year could easily cost you hundreds if not thousands of unplanned dollars.  How do you avoid “Spaving”?  1. Use a spending budget.  2. Make a list of your wants/needs and stick to it.  3. Just say “no” to the offers and avoid impulse purchases.
