The 2026 TIAA-Standford University financial literacy survey results are out and the numbers aren’t great. Over the last 10 years, financial literacy has fallen to new lows. Of the American adults surveyed, the average score was only 47% (that’s a failing grade by all standards!). Gen Z scored the lowest and folks over the age of 54 scored the highest. Surprisingly, basic retirement knowledge is really low with adults answering only 2 of 6 questions correctly. Only 27% even knew what Medicare typically covers. Why is this important? People with lower financial literacy are about TWICE as likely to have debt problems and THREE TIMES more likely to not be able to handle a financial emergency (can’t pay for an unexpected expense). Now, the great news. You don’t have to commit hours to studying finance or get a college degree in it to be successful.
